Alot of classic automotive “snob-ist’s” have always looked down their noses at AMC products. Claiming that AMC stood for “All Mistakes Conbined” or “Almost A Car”.  To be honest AMC made some real cool cars. With the influx of imports and the

soon to be introduced Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega AMC needed to do something fast. Strapped for cash they didn’t have the cash flow to design an all new car. So the decision was to use the exsisting Hornet platform. Rumor has it the AMC style guro Dick Teague drew up the Gremlin design on an air sick bag but truth be told it was future AMC design chief Bob Nixon who came up with radical chopped hatchback idea. Introduced in April 1970 AMC marketed the Gremlin as the “First American Built Imported Car” From the start the Gremlin was both a sales and critical success. Car and Driver loved the 71 Gremlin X gushing over it’s  ”Spirited handling and robust six cylinder engine”.  For model year you could order the very popular “X” package. Featuring cool stripes, wheels, upgraded interior, added chrome and a lusty 258 six clylinder engine. Despite being the but of jokes the Gremlin proved to be a good car. Over 671,000 Gremlins were sold between 1870-1978. Outlasting and outselling the engine exploding Chevy Vega. AMC Gremlins have strong club support and an almost cult like following. Despite the economic times or the price of fuel big American pickups sell. Sure small pickups from Toyota or Nissan have flooded our shores for decades but us made in the USA types love our full size “Pick-Em-Ups” Even though Ford has out sold rival Chevy in full size pickup sales since the start the Bowtie people have sold millions of trucks through the years.

With all those Heavy Chevy’s sold these trucks have a very loyal following. By the Mid 1980′s Chevy was on a roll with trucks sales. Model year 1985 Chevy upgraded the front of its popular C/K series with a quad headlight look and tall grill. If you went for the Silverado you got chrome bumpers, chrome grille, stainless wheel arch mouldings, chrome mirrors and an upgraded interiors with plush velour seats, carpet and wood dash trim. The standard issue engine was the new for 1985 4.3 liter fuel injected V6. Most people went for the V8. Engines ranged from the tried and true 305 small block up to the thristy 350 V8 with a four barrel Rochester carb. The combo of versitility and comfort made the 1985 Chevy Silverado a huge seller. Our feature 1985 Chevrolet Silverado Two Wheel Drive Pickup is a completely restored rust free southern truck. As with most pickups south of the Mason Dixon Line it is a 2 wheel drive. Poor little Triumph TR7 in many ways it never had a chance. Being next in line to replace the brawny TR6 was a task that would tarnish most new models. The TR6 was the last of the big six cylinder British Roadsters with little or no manners and full flex-a-matic frame. 

The TR7 was a totaly new sheet of paper. The problem was no many people wanted the TR6 to be replaced. When the TR7 came out the tried and true old time sports car fan snubbed it harder than Rosie O Donnell  being asked to a Jenny Craig meeting. 

The other problem was British Leyland was having labor troubles that led to horrible product quality. Even by British car standards. Adding to the mix was the tepid clanky slant four cylinder engine that didn’t sound very sports car like. Still these cars were much more advanced than the old timer TR6. Modern styling and comfy interiors made them much more liveable than the prior TR’s. Steering was light and crisp on the “Flying door stop” as Car and Driver said in a 1975 road test. Triumph ads of the day bragged it was ‘The shape of things to come” Indeed it was but maybe at the wrong time. Oddly these cars are now starting to stand the test of time and look almost modern these days compared to other cars of the era. many people blame the TR7 with killing Triumph in the USA. Maybe if they brought out the V8 powered Tr8 first thing might of been different. Like all Klingons the TR7 is rising in value due to the strong dollars the other TR’s bring. We are sure they will never hit the values of TR6′s. As with all British roadsters buy the best one you can. If you are looking for a vintage roadster on a budget the TR7 is a good choice. What’s It Worth? 1971 Buick “Boattail” Riviera ..The Last Great Buick?

From the start in 1963 the Buick Riviera was a special car. The brain storm of GM design head Bill Mitchell the Riviera was Buick’s first Personal Luxury Car. Through out the 1960′s and into the early 1970′s the Riviera kept true to its mission. By the early 1970′s Bill Mitchell wanted to make the 1971 Riviera stand out from the crowd. 

Under the direction of Mitchell GM stylist Jerry Hirshberg grafted the back of a 1964 Corvette to a full size Buick. At first the GM bean counters dismissed the design as too radical. But Mitchell had the power and clout to push the rakish design to the showroom floor.

Hirshberg would go on to become head of design for Nissan. When the all new Riviera hit the showroom floors in late 1970 some Buick purist were horrified. Others loved it. Unlike anything else on the road. The look was one of speed and its radical rear end was quickly nicknamed the “Boattail Riv” 

Powering the 1971 Riviera was Buick’s monster 455 cubic inch V8. the Riviera. Due to the new emissions regulations power was down to 245 horsepower in the base model and 265 horsepower in the “GS” The only transmission was the GM’s robust Turbo 400. A first first in the 1971 was the Full Flow Ventilation.

The system worked great but had one  flaw. The only in 1971 trunk louvers would send water vapor in a hard rain thru the interior of the car. The louvered trunk looked great but was dropped by 1972. Also new for 1971 was the Max Trac rear differential. This system helped greatly on slippery road surfaces or on hard turns. Like all Buicks the 1971 Riv could be loaded to the max. A few options were the GS type wheels, vinyl roof, leather seat,

sunroof, AM/FM 8 track player and power everything. The GS would give you stiffer shocks and springs and standard GS wheels. Most Buick people feel the 1971-72 Boattail Riviera’s are the best of the breed. By 1973 with tougher safety standards ugly 5mph front bumpers were added. By 1974 the Boattail was gone in favor of the “Colonnade” treatment. From the start you either loved the Boattail Riviera or hated it. As groundbreaking as these cars were they are only now starting to command the values they deserve. Good ones are hard to find. Partly due to the fact that alot of these gas hogs were sent to the big scrap yard in the sky as fuel prices rose and the OPEC Fuel Crisis in the mid 1970′s. The other problem is they share no other body parts with any other car on the road. Still they are very good cars. Engines are superb and the GM mechanical system are reliable and easy to find parts. If you can buy a good example drive it and enjoy it. Our feature 1971 Buick Boattail Riviera is a low miles all original car. It has only traveled 37,800 niles since 1971. It is in like new condition. Till today many classic car historians feel the 1971-1972 Boattail Buick Riviera’s are last of the great Buicks. What’s It Worth?
